Chapter Ten

Small Town America, 2013

“It’s okay,” I gently pulled my hand away from hers and shook the feeling back into it.

“No,” Jessica shook her head. “It’s everywhere. She’s everywhere!”

“Come here,” I pulled her into a tight hug and held her in place. It’s what used to do with Dottie when she was hysterical beyond reason. Even in death I couldn’t escape drama queens.

“No,” she pushed me away. “Don’t dote over me like I’m a senile ole biddy. She’s literally everywhere, Caroline!”

Jessica took short shallow breaths and paced the length of the living room.

“Stop doing that before you faint!”

“I’m not a fainter. I’m not a dainty southern bell,” she snapped.

“I never accused you of possessing a single quality of a southern bell,” my fingers curled to fists at my side.

“Good. I’ll take that as a compliment,” Jessica threw her hands in the air. “She’s everywhere. It hasn’t been this bad in decades. Then the chalk drawings tonight…”

“It was a coincidence,” I said attempting to keep up with her quick steps. “And slow down. Your legs are longer than mine. It’s hard to keep up with you.”

“You make me feel almost sane when you say stuff like that,” Jessica stopped pacing and laughed. “Why are you trying to keep up? I’m not going anywhere.”

“Because I don’t like talking to the back of your head,” I frowned. “And what happened to ‘you have to learn to move on or be miserable?’”

“Somethings refused to let go of you,” Jessica frowned.

I bit my lip and looked down at my feet unsure of what to say to her.

“Then I guess you get to be miserable,” I squared my shoulders and lifted my chin in the defiant way that used to make my father rub the bridge of his nose.

“You know, you’re really sexy when you try to act all in charge. You puff up like a peacock, but it puts your perfect breasts on display.”

“Is this really the time to be thinking about my breasts?” I crossed my arms over my chest.

“Don’t do that,” she shook her head. “Don’t shrink back into yourself because I teased you. It makes me feel like a bitch.”

“Then don’t be a bitch,” I tried to scowl, but ended up laughing instead.

“I wasn’t lying about your breasts though,” Jessica smirked. “You’re a distraction even when you’re not trying to be.”

I smiled despite myself.

“I’m never going to replace her, you know,” I said.

I didn’t want to be a filler for a dead woman. Yes, I was dead too, but I still moved in the realm of the living.

“You don’t have to,” she stepped closer to me. “It’s not about her. It’s not like that.”

She reached out to me hoping I’d close the distance, but I didn’t. I made her come to me.

“I like you, Caroline. I like you a lot,” she took me by the hips and pulled me close. “I think The Morrigan was trying to play matchmaker when she assigned me to be your mentor.”

The Morrigan just knew I excelled at handling drama queens, but I didn’t tell Jessica that.
